Snatch Blocks and Sheaves are common lifting mechanisms used for block and tackle, general pulling, rigging and may other applications.  They are used as a  pulley system by looping wire rope or manilla rope around the sheave (pulley) several times prior to hooking the load. The system reduces the amount of force required to lift heavy objects as the number of loops or pulleys used is proportional in the reduction of force required.

A Sheave Block has fixed side plates around the sheave or sheaves and can only be reeved by feeding the end of the rope through the block.  Snatch Blocks have a latch where you can open the side to reeve the rope over the sheave.
